Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening, acute complication of diabetes. Despite an increase in DKA hospitalization rates, the age-adjusted DKA in-hospital case-fatality rate has declined over time. However, with the advent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a suspected increase in the frequency and severity of DKA has been hypothesized because of the potential diabetogenic effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). To further characterize patients with DKA with and without COVID-19, we analyzed individual-level inpatient data from multiple US hospitals.
