Research Article: Psychological capital and psychological well-being among caregivers of individuals with alcohol use disorders: a mixed-methods public health study incorporating ayurvedic perspectives

Abstract:
In India’s mental health service delivery, caregivers’ needs are often overlooked despite the substantial burden and stress they experience, particularly when caring for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD), which in turn affects patient recovery. Ayurveda conceptualizes treatment as resting on four sub-pillars, one of which is the caregiver, and emphasizes specific caregiver qualities, called “Parichara” qualities, essential for favorable treatment outcomes. These include Buddhiman, Daksha, Anurakta , and Shuchi . These Ayurvedic concepts align with psychological capital (PsyCap), and this psychological capital plays a key role in enhancing the psychological well-being of caregivers. The study aimed to examine predictors of psychological well-being (PWB) among caregivers and to explore the psychosocial factors influencing their wellbeing. A concurrent convergent mixed-methods design was employed utilizing the Compound PsyCap Scale–Revised and Ryff’s PWB Scale among 125 caregivers recruited from two tertiary care hospitals. Socio-demographic variables predicted 37%, and PsyCap predicted an inverse relationship with the PWB. Additionally, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 10 participants, highlight themes related to associated challenges and stressors, as well as psychological factors that aid in facing these challenges. The study findings will equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge needed to enhance caregiver resilience, thereby improving treatment adherence and overall community mental health services for both individuals with AUD and their caregivers.
